Matt 7:21 “Not everyone that saith unto me Lord Lord shall enter into the kingdom of heaven but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” The elect are those who listen to God and obey. They repent quickly when they realize they are in the wrong (because we will never be perfect). When Jesus was on earth He said He did only what the Father told Him to do. Today, the Holy Spirit tells us only what the Father tells Him to say. Someone becomes born again by asking Jesus to come into their life and forgive them and cleanse / sanctify them. This establishes a personal covenant / contract with God, the Most High, the Creator, on the grounds of grace through faith in Jesus who paid a ransom for us by His shed blood. Israel, even though under an old covenant that was a foreshadowing of Christ, had free will to turn away and sin and then be rejected by God (after many many warnings of course). It can be the same for a Christian who turns away by becoming lukewarm, or through bitterness / unforgiveness, or unfruitfulness by not abiding, or by any of the new covenant sins that Paul lists that if practiced habitually without repentance is not going to lead to inheriting the kingdom of God. This includes grumbling, gossiping or reviling, adultery, idolatry, murder (which Jesus told us is hatred) .. trying to stop doing these things is not “earning” salvation.. but it is an expectation that we strive for that AFTER we have been born again. I did not fully understand this when I was younger. * The Holy Spirit had told me that my dog would be ready at the end of the summer and would be at Pet Smart. That’s why I watched for dog adoption days there specifically, rather than just going to adopt from a shelter. He actually did come from a shelter in Vernal, UT, which was several hours from where I lived. The Vernal shelter brought several dogs to my hometown. I just knew to be looking there for the right dog. My dog had belonged to a family who left him outside alone and never spent time with him. God divinely put us together.
