DIY Lawn Plug Aerator

Have compacted the soil over time and now have invasive weeds because the Bermuda grass can’t spread fast enough to crowd them out. We go thru multiple warm/cold cycles each spring where weeds can sprout so pre-emergent herbicides might get one crop of weeds but not the rest. Don’t like using herbicides because they can kill cool season plants and interfere with over seeding’s. Herbicides can get into water and food chain causing harm to other species. After looking at prices, decided to make my lawn plug aerator and plug tines. If it works, it’ll save a lot of money and it doesn’t, I won’t be out much cost. What I didn’t consider is the amount of force it takes to drive the tines into hard ground. I had to consistently remove tines to get good penetration in hard soil. Making a hybrid design like a manually operated aerator but using the tractor to push them into the ground. Originally was going to retrofit a tiller to be a plug aerator but the dimensions didn’t work out. Either the tines would be at an angle or too short to be useful. Originally was going to retrofit a rototiller so cut the tines to length for it, then figured out it wouldn’t work! Thought of making new hubs and welding everything together, but it was over 105°F or 40.6°C so just got it done and over. Estimated cost for this build is about 20 dollars. Sorry for the bad video but I work by myself and sometimes, just have to get it done so don’t record video. I don’t build prototypes so what you see is generally the first and only one I’ll ever build. PS: Shout out to Russell for giving me the vise. Vise is mounted on my old splitting stump that is so heavy it doesn’t want to move it all. Really helped out in the fabrication.
