June 2024 CAIRIBU* K12 Seminar Series: Characterization of a Patient-Derived Xenograft Model of Human Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, Alexandra Polasko, PhD This seminar features Alexandra Polasko, PhD, postdoctoral fellow, Stanford University, K12 Scholar at the CAIRIBU K12 Urology Research at Stanford (KUReS) Career Development Program. Currently, Dr. Polasko’s research focuses on elucidating the mechanisms that drive benign prostate hyperplasia, which is the abnormal growth of the prostate and affects nearly 80% of men over eighty and can result in impaired urine storage and voiding as well as renal failure. Her K12 work specifically focuses on the role of bone morphogenic protein 5 (BMP5) in the pathophysiology of BPH. Dr. Polasko was awarded Best Poster Presentation for her poster “Establishment and Characterization of a Patient-Derived Xenograft Model of Human Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia” at the 2023 CAIRIBU Annual Meeting. *Collaborating for the Advancement of Interdisciplinary Research in Benign Urology (CAIRIBU) is an umbrella organization that brings together NIDDK-funded investigators devoted exclusively to investigating benign genitourinary diseases and disorders. A primary objective of CAIRIBU is to encourage interdisciplinary interactions and build effective research collaborations that can tackle the most critical questions related to benign prostatic hyperplasia, urolithiasis, bladder disorders, urinary tract infection, pelvic pain, and genitourinary developmental disorders.
