Accelerating Evidence into Healthcare w: Learning System & Implementation Science in HPV Vaccination

There is a critical need to increase the speed, efficiency, and comprehensiveness with which evidence from research is translated into clinical practice. Learning health system science, implementation science, and pragmatic research embedded in clinical practice offer approaches to scientific inquiry that hold promise for bridging the gap between research and clinical practice. In this presentation, I will describe the research to practice gap and briefly introduce learning health system science, implementation science, and pragmatic research. Using the principles and practices of these approaches as a framework, I will provide a broad overview of research that our team has conducted to understand and address low HPV vaccination rates in our local communities. Specifically, I will summarize the epidemiological and survey research that we conducted to demonstrate the need the intervention to increase HPV vaccination and share greater details about the development, implementation, evaluation, and outcomes of an embedded pragmatic trial and process evaluation that we conducted to evaluate the impact of patient and provider facing interventions on HPV vaccination rates.
