Thailand's LANTERN FESTIVALS in Chiang Mai | Yi Peng & Loy Krathong (watch before you go in 2024)

Today we look back at celebrating the popular Yi Peng and Loy Krathong Festivals with locals in Chiang Mai, Thailand. These two festivals are commonly known as the Thailand Lantern Festivals and take place around November every year. They are celebrated all over Thailand and in fact Chiang Mai is one of the best places to see the huge variety of floating lanterns as well as sky lanterns. Loy Krathong is about floating lanterns in the water along the rivers or on temple grounds. Also known as the floating lantern festival, it symbolises giving thanks to the spirit of the river and the water it provides. At this time monks usually have a chanting and meditation ceremony in various temples as well. Yi Peng Festival, on the other hand is about releasing sky lanterns when the moon is at its brightest. The sky lantern festival symbolises banishing the darkness and moving towards a brighter future. We started our lantern festival celebrations by joining a parade that wen through various streets around the old town in Chiang Mai. Starting from Tha Phae Gate, it continued all the way to the Nawarat Bridge over the Ping River. Thousands of locals and expats joined the parade and it was amazing to see the celebrations and get to be part of such a unique atmosphere. There were traditional Thai dances as well as many unique Thai instruments being played. All ages came out to celebrate as well as many expats and tourists. Next, we got to witness the sky lanterns light up the night sky. It was stunning to watch them float away against the backdrop of the moonlit sky. We were even lucky enough to fly a few sky lanterns ourselves, it was not as easy as it looked but worth it. Another great part of the Yi Peng and Loy Krathong festivals is the multiple street food markets selling many yummy meals. We made our way to the river where we got to watch floating lanterns be released into the river and ate some tasty food from the close by night market. On day two there were not as many people out celebrating the lantern festival but there was still a party vibe throughout the city. We enjoyed being able to fly some sky lanterns in a less crowded area and being able to watch the sky light up with fireworks and lanterns. Do you have any plans on travelling to Thailand this year? We hope you consider visiting Northern Thailand and celebrating the Lantern Festival in Thailand in 2024 with the Thai locals and expats. We would choose this over a full moon party anyday!
