On 7 September 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a speech in Kazakhstan’s capital Astana, outlining a vision that would shake up not just transport routes but also global politics in the following decade. The speech set in motion what’s now known as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in Central Asia. But as the ambitious development campaign marks its 10th anniversary, the political landscape in Central Asia and the world has also been shifting. Growing US-China rivalry, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the advancement of the China-led connectivity drive have reshuffled the geopolitical calculus for players big and small in the region.
