Nunney Castle thunders through the West Country - The Torbay Express - 03/08/14

The first Sunday of August saw 5029 'Nunney Castle' once again take charge of the 'Torbay Express'. Unfortunately, I missed the only shot of the outward run I could get, which should have been Dawlish. Having caught the first train from Swindon, I would have to change at Bath to catch a Penzance service which would take me on to Dawlish. However, over running engineering works outside of London meant it was 18 minutes late by the time it reached me. To make matters worse, we were then held outside of Bristol awaiting a platform close to a connecting service, which was being held for our train, causing us to lose even more time. Because of this, we lost our path and were stuck behind a stopping service, crawling along until Worle Junction. Upon reaching Dawlish we were nearly 45 minutes down, had we been on time I would have gotten to Dawlish with 10 minutes to spare. The return was a completely different story, however, as fellow videographer and friend, David Oldham, agreed to let me come along with him in his car, so a big thank you to Dave for that. Anyway, on to the video itself, and we start off with a shot I've been wanting to get for many years, a Torbay Express heading out of Kingswear, hauled by Western motive power. Nunney is seen powering alongside the River Dart, passing Britannia Crossing with gusto, for the climb up to Churston. With this shot crossed off the to-do list, we decided to head to Pugham Farm, where Nunney powers past, on the east-bound climb to Whiteball Tunnel. With the train making stops at both Taunton and Weston-super-Mare, we had plenty of time to get over to Yatton. So, for the third and final shot, Nunney is seen in gorgeous sunlight, accelerating past the level crossing, and can be heard whistling for Yatton Station itself....lovely! Afterwards, I was dropped off at Yatton Station, and caught my train straight back home to Swindon. Safe to say it was a fairly mixed day. Filmed on a Panasonic HS900 with a Pro Sound L92AA microphone. Enjoy.
