Q&A With Clinton Anderson: Is It Normal for a Horse to Start Training Sessions With a lot of Energy

Question: I’ve been doing the Fundamentals groundwork for 3 months now. My mare is a 4-year-old Thoroughbred. She stays in a small paddock during the day when it’s not raining and in a stall at night and during rainy days. I work with her 5 days a week, but when I skip one day of groundwork, she gets so hot that when I turn her in the roundpen she runs like crazy for like 20 laps. She doesn’t do this right away, only when I first ask her to canter. After running around like crazy, she gets quiet and calm again. I would like to know if this is considered normal since she’s young and doesn’t have other chances to run during the day or if this is a problem of respect.
