I will cover topics such as: 1) What Price will you list the vessel at: This is where I’m critical of both brokers and owners; many owners have an infatuation and emotional attachment to their yachts, and therefore want top dollar. A broker stands to make a lot of money from obtaining a listing so they’ll agree to listing at a price that’s too high to actually sell to appease the owner, but then, brokers receive calls and take those clients to more realistic options or they schedule fake buyers to make it seem like there’s interest. Time goes on, your operating and maintenance costs continue to mount, and you end up getting pissed off at your broker, and they then suggest a price cut to what it should have been initially. Not good. 2) How is it presented: Browse through yachtworld and look at the quality of photos on some boats selling for a million, 5 million, 10 million. You as an owner should have photos professionally taken and allow you broker to use these images, which they will compensate you for after they sell the vessel. The reason why an owner should have these photos taken, is because if you have to hire another broker after firing one, well you have these done already. 3) Boat Shows (Your Cost or Brokerages) – Boat shows are great opportunities to get your vessel in front of qualified and interested buyers, but its costly and can be inefficient. You should know if you’re going to cover these costs or if the brokerage is. You should know how many shows your broker plans to put it in, and you should know if your broker will be the one onboard to show the boat or if they’ll have a friend, a model or a captain showing it. I can’t tell you how often you go to a boat show and the listing broker isn’t there to answer questions as their with other clients or off getting drunk and socializing which obviously lets a perfect sale opp slip through the cracks. 4) Dockage – More and more brokers are starting to pick up the cost of your dockage during a listing agreement which is really good, why? This is a big expense and your broker is more likely to be honest in what it will sell at as they now have skin in the game. So time to sell her, make sure that you have an open line of communication with your broker and make sure you hire a broker that tells you what you need to hear instead of what you want to hear.
