Training Your Dog To Stay Close

Jackie and Dolly The English Springer Spaniel Show Us How Proofing Is Done. In this video, Jackie shares how she trained her young and enthusiastic English Springer Spaniel, Dolly, to keep her attention on Jackie during a walk - not the other way around. This is a technique that was passed on to Jackie from a gun dog trainer that she and Dolly had a number of sessions with. For Jackie, it has been a miraculous change from walking a dog that was likely to be easily distracted and follow her own nose, to walking a dog that is attentive and responsive. The essence of the technique is unpredictability. All the time you are walking in the same pattern around the park or on the side of a field, your dog feels safe to dart off on their own, confident you will be where they think you’ll be on their return. As an owner, you learn to subvert their misplaced confidence by zigzagging, walking on a different tangent, or hiding. When your dog then follows or finds you, you can reinforce their behaviour with a healthy treat or a scratch behind the ears. Practised early and often, in the home and in the garden, proofing means that your dog will become alert and attentive to your movements, rather than you living in fear that they will disappear the moment you take your eyes off them. Jackie and Dolly demonstrate the technique in action - and everyone has great fun.
