The Silk Cut Jaguar line-up of Martin Brundle, Johnny Dumfries and Raul Boesel were favourites for victory, which would give the title to Brazilian Boesel. Tom Walkinshaw's other cars were to be run by Jan Lammers John Watson and Eddie Cheever and John Nielsen, so there was plenty of strength in the Big Cats' sure-footed march towards the title. Hans Stuck, Bob Wollek and Derek Bell had the powerful Rothmans Joest Porsche 962 and Jochen Mass and Oscar Larrauri the similar Brun/FAT version. Pitwork was almost as vital as the race itself as the mighty sports cars slithered into and out of the bays, with slick driver changes and even slicker mechanical miracles being performed by the back-up crews which proved to be vital.
