Detailed discussion into the arches of foot and its mechanicsm, function, stability and struture. Foot contains three arches which are the two longitudinal arches and one transverse arch. The longitudinal arches of the foot are medial and lateral longitudinal arch. The longitudinal arches anchors from calcaneum inti the metatarsal heads. The transverse arches are in coronal Plane and involves the cunieforms, the cuboid and the 4th and 5 th metatarsals. Among the longitudinal arches the medial arch is the highest and is taken as reference point. The stability of arches are maintained by three important parameters : the bone archeiture , the ligaments and muscles.Further arches of foot serves two diverse function of mobility and stability during weightbearing.
