Here is an example, played in both an advanced and basic congregational style, of adding variety to your hymn-playing, based on the text. For both versions, I play the first verse, the third verse ("Through many dangers, toils and snares") and the final verse ("When we've been there ten thousand years"). Changing octaves, adding arpeggios, using a key change, and changing dynamics are all easy ways to add variety to your hymn-playing that will enhance the music behind the text.
