Olifants Rest Camp is situated high up on a koppie (mountain), and provides breathtaking views of the Olifants River below. It is truly amazing, and the views are indescribable. You have to visit this camp, or stay at Olifants to experience this amazing site. The sun rises and sets in the valley beneath you, and the birds abound. Olifants Rest Camp itself is rich in bird life, and is extremely underrated as a bird watching camp in the Kruger National Park. We have recorded so many species here, from Woodpeckers, to Robins, to Finches, to Bush Shrikes. Every now and then you can also see Parrots and Hornbills flying overhead, or perched close to the fence. The restaurant area has a lot of birdlife and has bat boxes. You can watch the bats come out of their boxes to go on their evening hunts at dusk. It is incredible. Olifants Rest Camp has to be one of my favourite rest camps in the Kruger National Park. I would choose this camp over Satara and Letaba if I was staying in that sort of region. There are also Mongoose, Squirrels, Duiker, Bushbuck and Hyenas that patrol the fences at night.
