Midland Red operated in the The Midlands region from 1905. 2022 marks one hundred years since the legendary bus operator opened its very first garage depot in the city of Leicester in the UK. It was the trading name used by the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Company. One of the largest English bus companies with services between Gloucester in the south and Derby in the north. And from Northampton to the Welsh border. The company also manufactured buses. They started operating bus services in Leicester on 11th May 1921. Rapidly expanding, a site was adapted into a bus depot on 26th August 1922 at Frog Island Slater Street. Other sites followed: Welford Road (1925–1927) Southgate Street (1927–2009) Hastings Road (1932–1937) Sandacre Street (1937–1995) and South Wigston (1957-2021) Both Frog Island and Welford Road closed on 20th July 1927 when a purpose built Southgate Street depot opened. In 1974 the name was changed to Midland Red Omnibus Company. The company finally ceased trading on 5th September 1981 and five smaller operators were formed. Midland Red (East) Limited took over services in Leicestershire and rebranded under the name Midland Fox on 15th January 1984.
