Explore the North East's top botanical hotspot and uncover rare wildflowers that grow nowhere else in Britain. Upper Teesdale supports an unusually high number of rare plant species. There are unique combinations of northern and southern species growing together here. Several of the rare species grow in habitats found nowhere else in Britain. It is the North East's top botanical hotspot and one of the top five areas for rare plants in Britain and Ireland. Dr Margaret Bradshaw has studied the flora of Upper Teesdale in detail since the 1950s. In 2017 she set up the 'Upper Teesdale Special Flora Research and Conservation Trust' and since then John O'Reilly has worked on mapping the distributions of the rare species in Teesdale in detail for the Trust.
