Scoring a white-tail buck typically involves assessing the size and quality of its antlers. Here's a brief description of how to score a white-tail buck: Step #1 Measure the Inside Spread: Measure the distance between the inside edges of the main beams at their widest point. This measurement is called the inside spread. Step #2 Measure the Length of Each Main Beam: Using a flexible tape measure or a specialized scoring tool, measure the length of each antler's main beam. The main beam is the central shaft of the antler extending from the base to the tip. Step #3 Measure the Length of All Tines: Measure the length of each tine, starting with the G1 tine (closest to the base) and continuing to the G6 tine (the farthest from the base). Measure the length along the outer curve of each tine. Step #4 Calculate the Circumference Measurements: At four locations along each antler's main beam, measure the circumference using a flexible tape measure. These measurements are typically taken at the base, halfway up, just above the brow tine, and just below the smallest tine. Step #5 Record any abnormal points. Calculate the Gross Score: Add up the measurements of the main beam length, all tine lengths, and the inside spread. This total is known as the gross score. Deduct for Abnormal Points or Irregularities: If there are any abnormal points, deductions may apply. The B&C system has specific rules for determining which points qualify as abnormal and how deductions are made. Calculate the Final Score: After accounting for any deductions, you can calculate the final score of the white-tail buck's antlers. This score is used to categorize the buck's trophy quality and potential record status. Keep in mind that scoring systems may vary depending on specific organizations and regions. It's essential to follow the guidelines established by the scoring authority or group you intend to submit the score to. Additionally, scoring is typically done by experienced individuals or wildlife officials who are familiar with the specific rules and techniques of the scoring system.
