Mass XVII is the gregorian chant setting of the Ordinary prescribed for Sundays in the seasons of Advent and Lent and - depending on which book you are using - there are 3 different Kyrie melodies that can be used. In this recording I have chosen Kyrie A (in the Liber Usualis and older Graduales; in the 1974 Graduale Romanum it is listed as Kyrie B). This Kyrie is a 15th-17th century adaptation of its older version from the 10th century (labeled Kyrie A in the 1974 GR and is not found in the Liber Usualis or older Graduale Romanums). A recording of that version is also forth coming. The third Kyrie, labeled Kyrie C in all the books, is from the 14th century and has a slightly brighter sound to it and therefore, in my personal opinion and preference, I save this version for Advent and use the more somber sound of Kyries A or B for Lent.
