Headshot Photography Part One: An introduction to background choices, composition and styling

https://www.ginamilicia.com/ There are a couple of ways to take a great portrait. The first way and many would argue the best or most authentic style is the portrait that is taken by chance. The beauty of this kind of portrait is that at the right angle, in the right light, at the right moment everyone looks incredible. The problem with this style of photography is that it is not very efficient. You need to take a lot of images before you get a good one. Sometimes, depending on how you define “good” this could be 1 in 1000 images. My definition of a good portrait is that it tells a story about the person I am photographing without having to use any words. There should be enough details in the image to tell the viewer everything they need to know. I believe the most efficient way to do this is to manufacture it. In this tutorial, I share my thought process behind choosing backgrounds for a portrait, the best wardrobe choices and composition techniques. Gina Milicia was a world leading photographer who worked with high profile clients in the entertainment, fashion and lifestyle industries. She also pursued her own personal projects often travelling and sharing her adventures. Gina mentored aspiring photographers and it was her wish that her tutorials and teaching be made available for free to help emerging photographers improve their skills and build their own careers.
