Just outside of Yuma, Arizona, near the ghost town of Dome, lies the abandoned McPhaul Suspension Bridge. Built in 1929, four years before the Golden Gate Bridge, the McPhaul Bridge was Highway 95's crossing point of the Gila River until the 1960s. The section of the highway that bridge is on has long since been bypassed, leaving the bridge all alone in the desert. Due to safety concerns the bridge is now closed to traffic as well as people. It sits there as a reminder of the road that once was. The McPhaul Suspension Bridge is a rare suspension bridge in the American Southwest and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
