The Yakult story: Japanese health drink conquers the world with beneficial bacteria

Japanese scientist Minoru Shirota came up with the health drink by combining using water, skimmed milk, glucose-fructose syrup, sucrose, citrus aroma — and of course live bacteria. Shirota had discovered the presence of lactic acid bacteria in human intestines can suppress the growth of harmful bacteria. He used a microbe he called “Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota” in his drinks because the bacteria can survive a journey through the digestive tract and are said to be able to fortify internal organs. Yakult products are now sold in 38 countries and regions worldwide. Each day an estimated 39 million Yakult products are consumed around the world — 30 million by people outside Japan.
