When residents of Khersonskaya Street discovered the identity of the Bitsa Park Maniac in 2006, they were shocked. One neighbour, a 70-year-old woman named Svetlana recalled, "He called me Auntie Sveta. He loved animals and was inconsolable if a pet died. For forty years I lived in the same house as a maniac!"
