My Recommendations for a Day Trip to Bologna from Florence

My recommendations for a day trip to Bologna from Florence. Bologna has delectable food (Bolognese), historic architecture and vibrant street life. The short train ride from Florence can be added to any itinerary exploring the diverse wonders of Italy. Bologna is famous for its cuisine, providing an authentic taste of Italian culinary tradition. Piazza Maggiore is home to many of Bologna’s most impressive and important buildings. Piazza Maggiore is the heart of Bologna. The area on which the square exists today was built in 1200, as the citizens of Bologna needed a place to use both as market and as place of aggregation in general. The city’s main historic buildings overlook the square and most of the surrounding Palaces were built from the 13th century. While exploring Piazza Maggiore, don’t miss the adjacent Piazza del Nettuno and its famous 16th-Century Fontana del Nettuno (Fountain of Neptune). The Basilica di San Petronio: Standing in the main square is the Basilica di San Petronio. It is huge and you cannot ignore it. A symbol of the city. A beautiful church to visit. It is the the sixth largest Church in Europe.1390 saw the first stone laid. It is also unfinished due to funding and disagreements regarding how it should be finished? Open everyday and is free to enter. Having a freshly brewed coffee is the best way to start any travel or adventure. But as we know, it is not always easy to get your hands on a good cup whilst travelling. Good recommendations, therefore, are appreciated and I’m following up on a ‘good tip’ now. Aroma Specialty Coffees Via Porta Nova, 12b, 40123 Bologna The cafe offers a carefully selected menu of Italian specialty coffees, as well as more traditional coffee options and some fun flavored drinks. The perfect way to start a tour of Bologna. Climbing the Asinelli Tower The Tower was built between 1109 and 1119 by the family bearing the same name. 498 internal steps lead to the top at a height of 97.02 metres offering spectacular views of the city. Torre Garisenda, built at the same time as the previous tower, is different due to its shorter height of 47 metres. It was lowered for fear of it collapsing during the 14th century and is currently being restored. It’s even been nicknamed “the Leaning Tower of Bologna.” Unfortunately, due to repair work both Towers are currently closed to the public. Lunch in Quadrilatero After a busy morning of exploring historic Bologna, you’ve probably worked up quite the appetite. So it’s finally time to make the most of the city’s world-renowned food scene. Sitting just off Piazza Maggiore, Quadrilatero is the city’s historic food quarter and is claimed to be one of the best neighbourhoods for foodies in all of Italy. A big claim that I guess, you need to experience for yourself before deciding. Ragù alla Bolognese is a meat-based sauce originating from Bologna. Bolognese sauce was served as a topping for tagliatelle, a flat, ribbon-like pasta, enjoyed by many in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. The compact neighbourhood with narrow pedestrian-only cobblestone streets is packed with countless incredible market stalls, delis, shops, cafes, and restaurants. For your final historic attraction of the day, head just down the road to “Complesso delle Sette Chiese”, aka “Complex of the Seven Churches”. Located on Piazza Santo Stefano.
