Troops loyal to the UN backed government in the capital are trying to stop the advance of the warlord Khalifa Haftar, who began his offensive two weeks ago. At least 120 people have been killed. The UN says the fighting is undermining international peace efforts. But behind the scenes, some Western and regional countries have been giving support to Haftar.
