Omer Plays Bass . . . Nik Kershaw - Wouldn't It Be Good (bass cover)

Omer Plays Bass . . . Nik Kershaw - Wouldn't It Be Good (bass cover) Bass by Nik Kershaw Bass Used in this Video: Steinberger Spirit XT-2DB Hope you have a look and if you do, don’t forget to click 'Like" and subscribe to the channel Some songs just scream the era they were produced in and ‘Wouldn't It Be Good’ by Nik Kershaw from his 1984 “Human Racing” album is certainly one of them (perhaps along with Alphaville’s ‘Big In Japan’, ‘Self Control’ from Laura Branigan, ‘I Ran’ by Flock of Seagulls and ‘Doesn't Really Matter’ from Canada’s own Platinum Blond along with a few others as some of the most '80’s of all songs). The ’80s often gets a bad rap sometimes for the music – not as innovative as the '60s, not good as the '70s or as honest as the ‘90s - but one could argue that the rapid rise of technology in the ’80s including synths created the broadest style and genre shifts ever in music demonstrated by the wide variations in styles from new wave to hair and heavy metal to early hip hop and rock of many types prog, watch and classic and virtually everything in between. It’s not my favourite era of music, but there was a lot of great music produced at this time and alot of it that I enjoy as I was coming of age and learning as a bass player. I remember watching early MTV in the electronics department of the local home store where I grew up – we would go into the store and move the dish to MTV and stand there and watch for hours or until they kicked us out. ‘Wouldn't It Be Good’ along with a few other videos like ‘Jeopardy’ from Greg Khin, 'Blinded Me With Science' from Thomas Dolby and 'Money For Nothing' from Dire Straits are some videos that I remember well that were on seemingly constant rotation. The video for this song was very weird with aliens and a chroma reflective suit, but I always really liked this track with an interesting bass part played by Nik himself. ‘Wouldn't It Be Good’ along with ‘I Won't Let the Sun Go Down on Me’ also on “Human Racing”, and featuring prog producer extraordinaire Peter Collins who worked with RUSH and Queensrÿche, were two tracks that solidified Nik’s career as a great singer-songwriter-guitar player and earned him a spot on the roster of Live Aid on the Wembley stage in 1985. I used the perfect ‘80’s bass for this track – a Steinberger Spirit XT-2DB with lots of compression and chorus to get that “farty” ‘80’s bass tone. As well, the DB bridge on the XT-2DB is a cool feature on a headless bass to allow easy drop to D (surpassed only by the brilliant Kubicki drop-D system as the DB bridge is very finicky and needed some gaff tape to get the set screw to stay in place and not rotate and go out of tune when disengaged) which I used in the middle synth section of the track. Overall, a well-played and interesting bass part from a guitar player, which is not usual as guitar players often approach bass differently than bass players do. The original track also featured Fairlight, an early ‘80s sampling keyboard, that along with this bass tone and the heavily gated drum sound, became integral to the sound of the ‘80s. Disclaimer: I am not saying this is exactly how Nik Kershaw played this song, but it is how I would play it if I was playing it at a gig.
