The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972): Performing Capital

Luis Buñuel’s 1972 The Discreet Charm of The Bourgeoisie is a surrealist film about the hypocrisy and greed of a group of individuals, highlighting their detached worldview and oblivious nature, which, on occasion, lead to some humorous self-sabotage. It is a cynical social commentary, an absurd comedy enveloped in a wrapper of sophistication, a satire with just the right amount of logic and humor which continuously reminds us that it’s not the bourgeoisie that is discreet, but rather, their charm.  Yet for me, Discreet Charm wouldn’t have been possible without the importance of performance and the presence of capital. After all, the bourgeoisie is defined by its capital, but it is the nonchalant performance of that capital that gives this film’s characters their discreet charm. So today, I’ll be looking at how performance and capital form the two principal axes of Buñuel’s film. You’re watching SVM, I’m your host Emma, and this is my take on Discreet Charm. *** You can find Roger Ebert's full article here: https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/gr... And the full 1975 May-June issue of Film Comment magazine here: https://www.filmcomment.com/issue/may... Additional notes: * I realize my explanation of Bourdieu is simplified, to say the least, but there's only so much I can say about his work without going off track in analyzing the film. If you want a detailed description of his views on capital, check out this link: https://www.socialcapitalresearch.com.... **Also, the names of his written work that I mentioned are:  Distinction: a Social Critique of the Judgement of Taste (1979) and The Forms of Capital (1986) **I also realize that I haven't mentioned *everything about the movie and didn't go too in depth with the storyline or the way the characters differ from each other, so I will leave it to you to discover those aspects of the film... (there's only so much I can say in a 6-12 min video).  ****And finally, as was pointed out by a friend, I thought the words bishop and priest could be used interchangeably, but I guess I'm lacking in embodied/institutionalized cultural capital (at least in what concerns my knowledge of Catholic Church ordinations) to be able to make that distinction :) Music: Les copains d'abord (Georges Brassens) Serenade (Schubert) The Art of the Fugue (Johann Sebastian Bach, played by Glenn Gould) La non demande en mariage (Georges Brassens) La mauvaise reptation (Georges Brassens)
