America's Culture of Violence through a Buddhist Lens

Welcome to the Piece of Mind channel. We are a peaceful organization dedicated to making the world a better place. We are Engaged Buddhists concerned with the environment, peace, and goodwill. ~ In this episode we discuss America's culture of violence*. By *culture of violence we are referring to the trends and norms in Western civilization that play a role in socialization and that which informs people's actions. Violence has roots in things that are not generally considered violent: such as thoughts, words, and body language. Various aspects of our media and upbringing play an unseen, yet undeniable role in the acts of violence we see in our everyday lives. Constitutionalism (the concept of putting interpretations of the Constitution before all else; including American lives) is an immediate example for what we mean by *culture of violence*. The remedy and alternative to this quandary is to engender a *culture of peace*. We have latent traits within our nation that do indeed provide the ingredients to cultivate peace. But this requires work. Thus this episode addresses what actions we need to take in order to set out on the *path of peace*. ~ Featured in this episode is the following panel: Dharma Ocean, Prod. Dharma Sense, Dir. Dharma Peace, Dir. ~ List of organizations dedicated to reshaping America's firearms policies: Sandy Hook Promise founded in 2013 by the parents of the victims of the Sandy Hook incident that occurred in Newton, CT. Today, she has expanded the organization by partnering with veterans groups and medical professionals across the country. Everytown for Gun Safety established in 2013 when Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America joined together to advocate for evidence-based solutions for gun violence. (edited) Brady established in 1974 as the “National Council to Control Handguns” by Dr. Mark Borinsky to combat gun violence in America, after he was robbed at gunpoint. Then, in 2000, the charity was renamed Brady in honor of former Secretary of State Jim Brady and his wife Sarah who were instrumental in passing their namesake Brady Bill. Today, the charity remains as one of the largest gun safety charities in the country. March for Our Lives founded in 2018 by students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School (Parkland, Florida) with the aim of mobilizing young people to strive for firearms prevention. They were formed days after the infamous event at their school. Today, they organize demonstrations nationwide, and their members’ activities have been regularly covered by major news outlets. Victims First was founded by Anita Busch following the incident at the 2012 Aurora, Colorado movie theatre to ensure that future victims of mass casualty events would have easy access to charitable donations intended to help them. Since then, they’ve responded on the ground to the events that occurred at Newtown, Parkland, Orlando, and Uvalde. Survivors Empowered founded in 2012 by Sandy and Lonnie Phillips to help survivors access resources and tell their stories. They were formed after the Phillips’ daughter, Jessica, lost her life during the Aurora, Colorado movie theatre incident the same year. Their reach has grown over the years and now offers a network of trauma therapists, trauma response experts, and, most importantly, a place for survivors to connect and heal together.
