Let's make a Seaforth kilt: Part One

What a coincidence - an article about 'endangered craft skills in the UK' is published in The Guardian* two days before I make a kilt for a client in the UK! Join me as I take you step-by-step through the making of a Seaforth Highlanders kilt made to the old standard of workmanship! I've been contracted by a former soldier of the (British) Seaforth Highlanders to make him a kilt in time for his grand-child's wedding. The tartan is the 'Seaforth Centennial' - which I designed in honour of the 100th Anniversary of the Raising of the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada. The kilt will be made to the Seaforth regimental pattern: box-pleated to the white stripe - which was the reason for the regiment's old nick-name "the Silver-streakit Seaforth" - but will also have what I consider 'improvements' on the original design: deeper apron-pleats, a more-generous 'fold over' at the ends of the aprons, my own standard of 'canvassing', and it will fit at least as well if not better than the kilt he wore on parade in 1962 when the Seaforth marched into History and became 1st Bn Queen's Own Highlanders. I'm not a fan (read: I'm REALLY not impressed) of the (lack of) quality shown in recent Army contract kilts - so I'm really going to 'go to town' on this one in my salute to the military kilts of the past. *https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandst...
