MLB Opening Day 1996 Live from Shea Stadium Original Sportschannel Broadcast with Ralph Kiner, Howie Rose, Fran Healy and Matt Loughlin Recorded and Digitalized off a pre recorded VHS tape later converted to DVD (2002) and has been recently restored/cleaned up and making its debut on the Phenia Films MLB archival youtube page. A very memorable opening day Starting pitchers for opening day '96 is Andy Benes for St. Louis and Bobby Jones for New York and the MLB debut for Mets SS Rey Ordonez who receives his first hit in the Big Leagues and a spectacular defensive play I his first game. St. Louis takes a early lead in the 2nd scoring a run on a saf fly from Cardinals 1B John Mabry and scoring again in the 3rd on a RBI double from SS Royce Clayton. Cardinals score an addition 4 runs in the 4th inning including a 2 Run HR from Willie McGee. Mets tie the game in the fourth inning catcher Todd Hundley hits his first HR of 1996 making it a 6-2 Cardinal lead after 4 innings. Bobby Jones only goes 3.2 innings and is replaced by Blas Minor followed by Jerry DiPoto and Doug Henry The Mets come up with a run in the sixth as Bernard Gilkey hits a lead off HR. Tony LaRussa removes Andy Benes after the 6th, Benes goes 6 innings allowing 3 runs on 4 hits while striking out 5 and walking 1 as Rick Honeycutt comes in relief in the bottom of the 7th followed by relievers Cory Bailey and Tony Fossas as the Mets answer back with 4 runs in the seventh to take the 8-4 lead going into the 8th inning as Mets closer John Franco comes in the 9th shuts the door on the Cardinals earning his first save of the season.
