He spent most of his life in the town of Laval in North-West France. As a pupil and disciple of Louis Vierne, the famous organist of Notre Dame de Paris, Fauchard’s compositional style takes plenty of cues from the maître, but with a heavier lean on basing his themes on Gregorian chant. This is understandable as he was also ordained to the priesthood in 1903 and explored both these callings in the dual post of honorary canon and organist at the cathedral of Laval, La Trinité. His theme and five chorales on the plainsong hymn for Palm Sunday vespers 'Vexilla Regis' is a comprehensive look at the famous melody, treating it in a number of classically-informed ways, not dissimilar from the way Bach might have approached his chorale partitas.
