ABOUT IMPREZA : Subaru introduced the Impreza lineup in US for 1993 model year as a replacement for the Loyale (sold widely as Leone). The carmaker finally decided to use the Legacy platform for a smaller, compact-segment vehicle like the Impreza. It also to dropped the wedged shapes from the early '80s and switch to the rounded shapes of the early '90s before the biodesign trend. But it did even more. The first generation of the Impreza was initially offered in front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive in a four-door sedan or a five-door wagon. The Impreza came with a 1.8-liter horizontally opposed-four engine with 110 hp. In 1995, Subaru added a larger, more powerful 2.2-liter engine with 135 hp as an option; the base 1.8-liter unit continued on the base model. This was also the model year when Subaru introduced the Outback Sport, a slightly modified version of the Impreza wagon that used the larger Outback wagon as inspiration. ABOUT OUTBACK SPORT : The Subaru Outback Sport was introduced for the 1995 model year as an updated Impreza Sports Wagon. It was the top trim level of the Impreza wagon model with no significant mechanical or performance changes from the lower trim levels aside from a slightly lifted suspension. The standard engine was a 1.8-liter with a manual transmission, but an automatic transmission was available exclusively with the larger 2.2-liter engine. The Outback Sport was priced lower and aimed at a younger buyer than the Legacy-based Outback.
