Objectives: -Become familiar with concepts of morphine and hydromorphone infusions (time to peak effect, therapeutic window, steady state) -Learn how to achieve rapid relief of pain or dyspnea with opioids for comfort care patients -Improve ability to care for hospitalized patients on comfort care NOTE: Not all patients on comfort care need opioids. Opioids are indicated for patients with pain and/or dyspnea. Furthermore, an INFUSION is only needed if you think the patient will experience constant symptoms and cannot take medication by mouth. Otherwise, as-needed doses by any route of administration will do. In the video, I recommend a very conservative waiting period of 12h before titrating infusions. In real life, it is common practice to titrate drips as often as every 8 hours. Only under guidance of a pain or palliative specialist should the drip be titrated more frequently.
