Walsall 4-0 Bristol City | Division 3 Play Off Final Replay (30-5-88)

May 30th, 1988 went down as a great day in the history of Walsall Football Club as the team won the Third Division Play Off Replay with an emphatic 4-0 win against Bristol City at Fellows Park before a crowd of 13,007 on a Bank Holiday Monday. The first leg at Ashton Gate had seen the Saddlers win 3-1 to take a healthy lead back to Walsall with Trevor Christie and David Kelly with two on target. Instead of pushing on to secure promotion in the second leg Walsall froze on the day and Bristol City won with a comfortable 2-0 win which Walsall hardly got into the game. Manager Tommy Coakley called the players in on the Sunday for a chat and the players admitted to him they had bottled it. Whatever was said in that team meeting had the desired effect for the replay at Fellows Park the following afternoon as Walsall looked a totally different team and were up for this game right from the off. The game was effectively all over by the 20th minute as rampant Walsall sailed into a 3-0 lead which rocked Joe Jordan's men. David Kelly had already gone close on two occassions when he gave Saddlers a 12th minute lead as he took advantage of a mix up between goalkeeper Keith Waugh and Steve Galliers to fire home. Four minutes later the alert Kelly doubled Walsall's lead as he shrugged off a challenge to fire home. Willie Naughton had a fine diving header cleared off the line before moments later Phil Hawker headed home a Mark Goodwin header to send the home fans wild. Bristol City came close after the interval on a couple of occassions before livewire David Kelly completed his hat trick in what turned out to be his last game for the club before his big money move to West Ham United with a curving 63rd minute shot to confirm Walsall's promotion to the Second Division. City's Carl Shutt was sent off in the 88th minute for foolishly taking a swipe at home goalkeeper Fred Barber and there was a pitch invasion by Walsall fans who thought the game was over prematurely but when the final whistle blew there was a tremendous roar by the home fans as Walsall had at long last reached the second tier again. David Kelly said a couple of days after this win, "To say that Monday was the best day of my footballing life would be an understatement. We won, I got a hat trick, and, an hour after the match I was told I had been selected for the Rebublic Of Ireland's European Championships squad."
