Metro Trains at Callerton Parkway Level Crossing compilation, Tyne & Wear

Official name: Callerton Lane Level Crossing Date(s) filmed: Sunday the 12th to Wednesday the 15th of May 2024 Route: Tyne & Wear Metro Green Line - Callerton Parkway Stop Crossing type: Automatic Open Crossing Locally-monitored by traincrew (AOCL) Filming location: Callerton Lane, Woolsington (NE13 8AU) Trains featured: Class 599 "Metrocars" (Tyne & Wear Metro) Towards the station is the direction of Newcastle / South Hylton, and away over the level crossing is towards the Airport. Here's a bumper compilation of Tyne & Wear Metro services passing over this rather unusual level crossing next to Callerton Parkway Metro Stop located near Newcastle Airport - much more rural feeling than the majority of the Tyne & Wear Metro. Making use of staying very close by over a couple of days, here I feature multiple different shots and angles taken at multiple different times of day! Hope you enjoy! This is one of 5 level crossings on the Tyne & Wear Metro which are un-gated (have no barriers but just warning lights and alarms), and they're operated and maintained by Nexus. Some are in remarkably busy locations, and are quite striking and intriguing! They're very much mainline-standard with the quality and spec of the equipment being what you'd see on the main line, all last fully renewed at some point in the mid-2010's. The Tyne & Wear Metro operate a 12-15-minute frequency of trains in both directions, making them the busiest mainline / Network Rail spec un-gated level crossings anywhere in the country. This is nothing on the 3-5-minute 'turn up and go' frequency the infrastructure is capable of providing for, however! It's for this reason they've been kept un-gated as barriers would not be practical with that many trains, and incident rates at them are remarkably low due to it being a controlled Metro system with trains that can stop quickly in an emergency. This one is yet more unusual as it's also the only remaining active 'dual carriageway' ungated level crossing, with a large traffic island in the middle of it. Both alarms are quite quiet, and as is the case with the Metro's other un-gated level crossings, trains are required to approach cautiously and give a loud blast of the horn before crossing, and then they can accelerate pretty much as soon as the front of the train is clearing the crossing. Here, they tend to do it only to stop again straightaway to serve the adjacent station. There is no 'another train coming' facilities here or at any of the others, so if two trains were to meet each other here (which they're timetabled to do), only the first to activate the crossing can pass while the other waits at a red signal, and at least ten seconds or so plus the time for the crossing to work again must pass after the crossing deactivates first time before it too can proceed.
