Both Goblins and Elemental Cobalt have their roots in the Germanic word for Goblins. I Think this might have something to do with garden gnomes as well but I’m still working on that one.The Greeks even have their own mischievous pests call kobalos. Based on that we can see why if you were looking for something more ancient and devious than goblins you might find your way to a Draconic type creature. Kobolds are crafty, love to tinker and make traps for wayward adventures and above all Jealous and spiteful. They are easily subjugated by Those they would consider superior and are often found at the beck and call of dragons or monstrous beings. Mind you to a Kobold half the fun of being subjugated is plotting and scheming to free yourself from the people you freely agreed to serve. Makes sense i suppose…. To get the real feel of a kobold you need to look at what they are. Both pathfinder and D&d have them as small creatures usually not breaking 3ft and while they are incredibly quick denoted by a +2 dexterity bonus they are inherently weak. Dnd does this by reducing their carrying capacity and giving a minus to strength which is fairly rare in the fifth edition. And pathfinder gives them a whopping -4 to strength and a -2 to constitution. So if that doesn't tell you something right there i don’t know how else to convince you. These things are squishy. They do have 60ft of darkvision but at the cost of sunlight sensitivity. High dex and low constitution score which can work really well for fitness rogues or soccorers that don’t rely on their strength to much. But really what I should have done was embraced the weakness and built a character focused around the traps. They are small and deceptive and happy walking around in the dark. That’s actually pretty good for a party of larger armor wearing creatures. This does mean that you might end up in a tight spot from time to time but Where there's one kobold to join the party I’m sure the DM could find one of their cousins to join in. And this brings me back to the Goblins. I love goblins, across the board from dnd to Magic the gathering their greed and love of explosives just makes me laugh every time. I really think that while kobolds may not be as greedy as goblins they make up for it with their tenacity to Move things right along. If you get my drift. Set up the trap, trap fails, taunt the adventures and cower by the trap until they come back and spring the trap yourself. Kobolds are weak and they are meant to be so, They can be a lot of fun to play because they have a different mindset than most playable races in the Dnd/pathfinder universities. They are very small and aware of this but there are many of them and they are spiteful. Sure a goblin will blow itself up from time to time but that's usually because it seemed like a good idea at the time. But a kobold will blow itself up because it might be inconvenient for you. Overall I wouldn’t play on in a super serious game, and very specifically I wouldn't play one without talking to my gm or my other players for that matter. Now if you have a cleric that is constantly trying to keep your energetic lemming from throwing itself in to danger. Or the party is payed a large sum of money to transport a Kobold through enemies lines on a secret mission.. Then this might be the right time to play one. Sometimes it's fun to play a weak character. #dndart #criticalrole #criticalrolefanart
