Except for the exchange variation, it requires least learning of all the main theoretical lines. Learn the basics of the French Defense, common variations & ideas for both sides in this introductory video:    • Introduction to the French Defense ⎸C...   The Exchange French:    • Exchange Variation of the French Defe...   The Tarrasch French:    • Tarrasch Variation of the French Defe...   The Winawer Variation:    • Winawer Variation of the French Defen...   The Rubinstein Variation:    • Rubinstein Variation of the French De...   The Steinitz Variation:    • Steinitz Variation of the Classical F...   The advance variation is an easy option to start with against the French Defense because the aren’t that many options black could go for. If you are looking to simplify matters in your e4 repertoire, the Advance French should be the way to go. The variations starts after the moves: 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 – advancing the pawn and gaining space in the center. Black really only has one move … c5 – immediately crashing through white’s central structure and pushing his strongest pawn break. 4. c3 Nc6 5. Nf3 – at move 5 black gets to choose a variation, and he is the first side that decided which direction play is going to go in. There are three main moves for black: 5…Qb6 – the main line and the most aggressive option 5…Bd7 – the Euwe Variation 5…Nh6 Players whose games you should study: Alexander Grischuk, Fabiano Caruana, Alexey Shirov, Sergei Zhigalko, Evgeny Bareev, Baadur Jobava
