You lie in his cottage for the night as he hides you away from the guards who are coming after you because you’re a druid. With magic banned in Camelot, nowhere is safe, but with Merlin, you believe there might be a future for wizards like him and everyone alike. You’re waiting for him to come from his trip outside when you hear horses clop by. They remind you of home. “Sorry I took so long.” says Merlin, closing the door. “You must be hungry.” He sits on a stool by your bedside and hands you some bread wrapped in cloth. “What is it? Are you upset?” You shake you head and eat the bread. “Did you think I wasn’t coming? I promised you I would.” You try to smile, but you can’t maintain eye contact. “I scare most people away.” “I’m not most people.” “You can’t trust everyone.” “I know. That’s why I left home.” “Where is home?” “Ealdor? It’s a small village, a few fields, a couple of cows. Nothing special.” The smile comes easier now. “I remember my home. The happiest people, the best strawberries. And the summers–those were the best because the sun would set right on our land like a warm blanket.” He brings one knee up his chest. He seems completely entranced by your story. “Sounds perfect.” “It was.” “Was?” “King Arthur had word of our magic and destroyed our village.” His face falters. “You’ve been on your own ever since.” he leans forward, “You’re not on your own anymore.” He grabs your hand. His are so gentle. You squeeze back. “I’m going to look after you, I promise.” “But why?” “I don’t think you understand. I’ve never known anyone like you.” You feel the blood rush to your cheeks. You let go of his hand and return to your meal. “It’s good.” He has a strange face on as he pats his knees. Something like mischief. “Believe me, it’s fit for a prince.” You reach for your water on the side table. “Is that a druid symbol?” Merlin points to your arm. “Were you born a druid?” “Why so many questions?” you take a sip. He blinks. “No I didn’t mean to.” “It’s alright. It’s just–hard to understand.” “I understand. I know what it’s like to keep secrets.” That’s right, isn’t it? Merlin lives in Camelot. The worst place to be a magic wielder. “Does anyone know about your magical secret?” “Only you. And one other person. He knows, but I'm not sure he understands.” “I wish I was like everyone else but– ” “You always know deep down you’re not?” “Because I’m cursed.” “Don’t say that! Magic doesn’t have to be a curse. It can be a gift.” Oh, how innocent Merlin can seem. Such a light in these dark times. “Look.” he sticks out his hand, aiming it before a lit candle. He says a spell, the magic drips off his tongue like he’s been doing this he whole life. The air thickens, and the fire on the candle lifts in the air, hovering and moving in circles like a carousel. You laugh. “It’s beautiful.” You spend the rest of the night in his home by the fire. You eventually fall to a fever, but Merlin settles besides you and lets you sleep on his shoulder while nursing you back to health. Throughout the night he tries to make you feel better by performing magic tricks and such, but he has to leave in the morning. He promises he will return.
