Reinette Heunis of Suurbraak Aquaponics talks about shaping a sustainable farming business

In the settlement of Suurbraak in Overberg District Municipality, Western Cape, Reinette Heunis runs an agroecological Aquaponics farm, involving other women. She also works with Mawubuye and Inyanda land movement as an agroecology coordinator in the region. She talks about the challenges communities face to access land and how her farm has largely been made possible through the ongoing support from non-governmental organisation, Trust for Community Outreach and Education (TCOE), with a small sum and a renewable land lease coming from government. Her vision is to become fully sustainable within the next few years, which would be made easier if she was able to access further government support. In particular, she is currently looking at how to access markets, which is another key challenge facing smallholders. Many other young small scale farmers need support to become sustainable and successful.
