WSA Film Music Days 2023 | Creative Partnership: Ryûsuke Hamaguchi & Eiko Ishibashi

WSA Film Music Days 2023 | Creative Partnership: Ryûsuke Hamaguchi & Eiko Ishibashi The creative collaborations between composers and filmmakers regularly lead to the most intriguing oeuvres. With Creative Partnerships, we shine the spotlight on exceptional collaborations between director and composer. Director Ryûsuke Hamaguchi did not often use music in his films until he heard the music of Japanese multi-instrumentalist Eiko Ishibashi. In Ishibashi's multifaceted oeuvre - from a happy memory of her hometown to a jazzy ode to a character from Law & Order - Hamaguchi recognised a contemporary and a fellow cinephile. The contemplative score of his meandering Oscar winner Drive My Car was born. Furthermore, Hamaguchi's new film, Evil Does Not Exist, saw the light of day after Ishibashi asked him to create images to accompany her music. These dialogue-free images became Gift, the film that will have its world premiere at Film Fest Gent, with a live score performed by Eiko Ishibashi. Taka Chiyo - Moderator Taka Chiyo has been involved with more than 40 Japanese feature films including critically acclaimed titles including Death Note - Light up the New World (2016), Memoirs of a Murderer (2017), Diner (2019) and among others as music supervisor/music coordinator and most recently worked for an Oscar and Golden Globe nominee, Mamoru Hosoda’s latest animated feature Belle (2021) as music supervisor. In 2022, Studio Chizu, an animation studio and the home of Mamoru Hosoda, established a music supervision company as a group of companies, and Taka Chiyo was named as Co-CEO along with acting as music supervisor for the works of Studio Chizu and other projects of both live-action and animation.
