ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: HOUSE OF MIRTH

(26 Aug 1999) English/Nat XFILES STAR JOINS FORCES WITH ACCLAIMED DIRECTOR STORY: HOUSE OF MIRTH LOCATION: EDINBURGH DATE: AUGUST '99 Acclaimed English filmmaker TERENCE DAVIES is back behind the camera, shooting an adaptation of the classic Edith Wharton novel "THE HOUSE OF MIRTH". Set against a background of wealth and social hypocrisy in turn of the century New York, the tragic love story stars XFiles leading lady GILLIAN ANDERSON as Lily Bart, a ravishing socialite at the height of her success whose position becomes precarious when her beauty and charm starts attracting unwelcome interest and jealousy. Torn between her heart and her head, Lily always seems to do the right thing at the wrong time. When she seeks a wealthy husband and in trying to conform to social expectations, she misses her chance for real love with Lawrence Selden, played by ERIC STOLTZ. Similar themes were explored in another Wharton adaptation, Martin Scorsese's "The Age of Innocence", in which Daniel Day Lewis married to please society, only to regret spurning the love of disgraced divorcee Michelle Pfeiffer. But Terence Davies, who helmed the acclaimed "Distant Voices, Still Lives" and "The Long Day Closes", promises a different take on the rarefied, upper class world of Edith Wharton. He's currently shooting in and around Edinburgh, Scotland, which is doubling for 19th century New York. "The glittering facade of New York society at the turn of the century only thinly veils a compassionless world of savage humour and cruelty," says Davies, whose last film "The Neon Bible", failed to ignite the art house box office. "We live in a world of surfaces, and Edith Wharton's world is no different." The stellar supporting cast includes DAN AYKROYD (The Blues Brothers, Driving Miss Daisy), LAURA LINNEY (The Truman Show), ELIZABETH MCGOVERN (The Wings of the Dove) and JODHI MAY (A World Apart). Apart from the XFiles movie, Gillian Anderson's recent film credits include "Playing By Heart", "The Mighty" and "Chicago Cab".
