2022 09 25 - Drone Flight 19: Dyer's Quarry, Torquay Harbour, and London Bridge

Today we take off from the old Dyer's Quarry below the coastal path, and we fly in towards Torquay harbour, before heading back past the Imperial Hotel and along towards Daddyhole. We then return inshore to take a good look at the natural rock arch known as 'London Bridge'. The arch looks particularly stunning today as it's a low spring tide, and this creates a large fall between the current water level and the visible high water mark. I was also helped today by a whole barrel of serendipity: There were all sorts of watercraft out in the bay, taking advantage of the late September sunshine. This meant I was able to capture video of a local tour boat, a jetski, a sailing yacht, and a luxury motor yacht, all in succession. Then I stumbled across Serge's wonderful piece of music (more on that below) - and it all just came together nicely. The Imperial Hotel is undoubtedly Torquay's grandest hotel since the demolition of the old Palace Hotel. It was once a beautiful Victorian building, covered with the usual grand exterior ornamentation that the Victorians were so adept at creating. But, sometime in the 1960s, all the adornments were stripped off and the building's exterior was made-over to look like a bland 1960s concrete building. Such is the march of progress! It's still an amazing place to stay though, so you can't knock it for that. There's no official path down to Dyer's Quarry. But it IS possible to get down there using a precarious path made by local anglers over the years. The route gets rather too near the sheer cliff for my liking, and I'm horribly unfit now, and was wearing completely the wrong shoes for such a task. But I made it in the end, and it was definitely worth it - as scary as it was to get there! The climb back up was much easier, but I found myself completely out of breath when I got back to the path! I'm definitely not getting any younger. Finally, I had to resist the strong compulsion to fly right through the arch. Yes, I know I'm a coward, and I'm pretty sure there's enough room to do it. But I recognise that I still don't have enough experience to risk my drone doing that sort of skilled flying yet. I may return and give it a go one day, but at the moment, I'll stick to places where I have room for error! He's an absolute genius in the way he builds his orchestrations, and this piece is no exception. Thank you Serge.
