Hotel Okura Kyoto, built in the heart of Kyoto City, is a long-established hotel with a history of more than 130 years. You can experience traditional hospitality. This hotel was opened in 1890 (Meiji 23) on the present site of the former Kyoto Choshu domain residence as Kyoto Hotel, the first genuine Western-style hotel in Kyoto. A statue of the founder, Matakichi Maeda, and a statue of the first Prime Minister, Hirobumi Ito, who was a close friend of Matakichi Maeda, are erected on the hotel grounds. In addition, a statue of Kogoro Katsura, a Choshu Domain volunteer who worked hard for the Meiji Restoration, has also been erected. Guest rooms on the higher floors have good views and some rooms have views of Higashiyama mountains and the Kamo River. My room is also a superior twin room with a view of Mount Higashiyama and the Kamogawa River. The hotel lobby is European in style, with palatial columns, an elegant grand staircase and high ceilings. The hotel has 17 floors above ground and four below, connected by a stairwell from the 7th to 16th floors where the rooms are located. Inside the hotel there are restaurants, bars and cafés serving French, Japanese, teppanyaki and Chinese cuisine, offering the gastronomic delights of a long-established hotel. I enjoyed a sweet plate representing Kyoto's summer traditions at the café Lec Court. For dinner, I used room service. I savoured the main dish of Stewed Japanese beef in red wine sauce while relaxing in our room. It was very tasty. For breakfast, I had a set meal with Kyoto-style seasoning at Kyoto Cuisine Irifune.
