It involves creating a new root system on a branch while it is still attached to the parent tree. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to propagate fig trees by air layering: Air layering is a relatively easy way to propagate fig trees, and it can be done at any time of year. However, the best time to air layer is during the spring or summer, when the fig tree is actively growing. Here are the steps on how to air layer a fig tree: Select a suitable branch: Choose a healthy and flexible branch that is about pencil-thickness or slightly thicker. The branch should be at least one year old. Prepare the branch: Make a small cut on the branch about 12-18 inches from the tip. This cut should be approximately 1/3 of the way through the branch and should be about 1-2 inches long. Remove any leaves or side shoots from the area around the cut. Create a rooting medium: Prepare a well-draining rooting medium such as cocopeat. Place the bag around the branch, making sure that the exposed cambium layer is in contact with the cocopeat. Secure the bag in place with a rubber band or twist tie. Keep the cocopeat moist. If it dries out, mist it with water or add more moisture. Avoid overwatering, as excessive moisture can lead to rot. In a few weeks, roots should develop from the exposed cambium layer. Once the roots are well-developed, Cut and pot the new plant: Once a sufficient root system has formed, you can cut the branch below the root area. Carefully remove the plastic wrap or bag, taking care not to damage the delicate roots. Plant the rooted branch in a suitable container filled with well-draining potting soil, and provide it with proper care and maintenance. Acclimate the new plant: Place the potted fig tree in a sheltered location with indirect sunlight for a few weeks to allow it to acclimate to its new environment. Gradually expose it to more sunlight over time. By following these steps, you can successfully propagate fig trees using the air layering method. Remember to be patient throughout the process, as it may take several months for the roots to develop.
