Stereo Mars Hi Fi official launch (1985) Super Cat, Nicodemus, Burro Banton, Tenor Saw, Little John.

‪@LeoOReggio‬ Website: https://leosretroreggaestore.company.... This is a historic video, as it heralded the official launch of Stereo Mars Hi-Fi and the return of its owner, Skeng Don aka Trainer, to Jamaica, from "exile" in the USA. As you will see, the main acts for the sound system were dressed in full white suits, with Tenor Saw and Little John making guest appearances. Early B was in the audience but I assume he did not take the microphone out of loyalty to Kilimanjaro Sound System. The now-deceased Clinton "Jingles" Davy, promoter, political activist, and the owner of Skateland, the very popular entertainment location in Half Way Tree, Jamaica, was the co-producer for this event, and he was also Skeng Don's "agent" for Stereo Mars. Skeng Don's given name is Kenneth Black. In 1985 he formed the label Skengdon. Among the first releases were Cocoa Tea's "We Are The World", Supercat's "Vineyard Party" and Nicodemus' "Suzie Wong". The latter one, a tale of Nicodemus' Japanese love on the Stalag rhythm, quickly became one of the most requested songs on the radio. The following year the label released a string of acclaimed albums by artists such as Super Cat and Nicodemus. More records were followed by artists such as Little John, Yami Bolo and Winston "Electric Dread" McAnuff. My contact with Skeng Don is unique. I produced a music video for Winston McAnuff featuring acclaimed creative dancer, Patsy Ricketts, and the artist came to me saying that Skeng Don wanted to talk to the person who did the video. He was in Miami, so we did a telephone link where he told me that he loved the video and he wanted me to do some work for him. The first of which was to videotape his parents at their home, as they were celebrating their anniversary and I enjoyed every moment of that encounter. I went on to videotape his horse racing farm and his house that was being built at that time in Mandeville. I was his video eyes to see what was happening to his interests here in Jamaica since he was unable to return at the time. Of course, Iater I videotaped many of his Stereo Mars aka Stur Mars events. Mr. Kenneth Black is no longer involved in the music industry; in the early 2000's he ran a successful company called Black Brothers that owned a large quarry and a construction company in Mandeville, Jamaica. Footnote: The name Skengdon is a combination of skeng (firearm/gun) and don. The latter part, a title given to persons with immense respect - perhaps mostly inspired by the use it had among mafia crime bosses such Don Corleone's character in The Godfather Trilogy. Outside of the music industry, Skeng Don was a legendary character whose connections with the PNP and the people of Jamaica, are well documented. He is the real Don of Dons in Jamaica but a smart, benevolent, and business savvy one, a nice brethren to many. a.
