Timmy vs Greer Lightspeed vs Wampler Pantheon vs EHX Soul Food vs Teisco: Transparent Overdrive Test

Today, by popular request, I compare five of the best transparent overdrive pedals in my collection: the legendary Paul Cochrane Timmy, the Greer Lightspeed Organic Overdrive, the Wampler Pantheon, the Electro-Harmonix Soul Food, and the Teisco Overdrive! Get the Lightspeed here: https://thmn.to/thoprod/478415?offid=... Get the Pantheon here: https://thmn.to/thoprod/447221?offid=... Get the Soul Food here: https://thmn.to/thoprod/329887?offid=... Get the Teisco Overdrive here: https://teisco.com/products/teisco-ov... Good luck finding a Timmy, as I explain in the video! But thankfully you can also you can get the MXR Timmy (designed with Paul Cochrane himself): https://thmn.to/thoprod/486929?offid=... Now, we guitar players all know the term “transparent overdrive”: it’s a hallowed thing, a pedal that gives us luscious saturated sounds without changing the character of our guitar or amp. But behind the buzzword, the five pedals here are simply five outstanding overdrives. They come in at a range of different prices, they’re built around different circuits, and they can all sound quite different if tweaked. But, at the heart of it, they’re all fantastic stompboxes that frequently get mentioned when the transparent overdrive topic is discussed. The Paul Cochrane Timmy is possibly the pedal that started the whole transparent craze. Unassuming, quirky and extremely hard to come by in my part of the world, it’s a beautiful creation that adds sparkle and life to any clean guitar sound, and is capable of a whole lot more. The Greer Lightspeed is cut from a similar cloth – it’s a super simply yet incredibly versatile take on the transparent, or organic, overdrive. Meanwhile, the EHX Soul Food is the cheapest pedal in the shootout (you’ll find one for under $100/€100 if you’re lucky) and is more like the iconic Klon Centaur in terms of its circuit. The supremely versatile Wampler Pantheon, on the other hand, takes its inspiration from the legendary Bluesbreaker design, while the underrated Teisco Overdrive is a bit of a wildcard… but as you’ll hear, it rocks that transparent thing too! In the video, I run the five pedals through an indie rock loop played on the bridge single coil pickup of my Fender Telecaster. The pedals are running into my Hughes & Kettner AmpMan Classic on the clean channel, with no reverb. Which one do you think sounds best? That’s it. No post-processing on the sounds was done. Oh, and I used my Boss RC-10R to record and play the loop.
