Awesome Again, who won the Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga as a 3-year-old last August, returned to win the Whitney Handicap today by three lengths over Tale of the Cat, and added another level to his career by remaining undefeated at 4. He allowed Tale of the Cat to set a slow pace for almost a mile, but did not let the speedy Cat steal the race. As they turned for home, with the seasoned Pat Day biding his time, Awesome Again collared Tale of the Cat, passed him after a brief duel and widened his lead as they flew home with six other horses in pursuit. This was the 71st running of the Whitney, one of the landmarks of racing at Saratoga, and a crowd of 30,665 watched it on a sunny afternoon. The crowd followed form at the betting windows, making Awesome Again the 8-5 favorite and Tale of the Cat next at 2-1. And that's the way they finished. Crypto Star, the fourth favorite, followed three lengths farther back in third place, and Frisk Me Now, the third choice, was next in fourth.
