Emma Kirkby, soprano Anthony Rooley Translation: You lovers, I can tell you from experience that it is much better to flee from a beautiful and charming woman, whether she is cruel or merciful; in every manner and way, dying of love is a folly. One should not believe to find joy in love: happiness in love is reserved only for a moment, and, in the end, a beautiful woman never gives roses without thorns. The hope of joy is based on suffering; beauty and kindness never are companions. To my own grief, I have experienced that death and love always go together. Floods of tears are necessary to extinguish the Vesuvius of an enamoured heart, of an inflamed spirit; before one arrives in the harbour, one says so often: “Alas, I am dying!” Believe him who can say from experience: “I saw, I was!” If you do not want to believe it, then let it be; it matters little to me. Continue to love, for whoever must break his neck in any case, should be afraid of neither the hills nor the abysses; and I have always heard said as a proverb: “One cannot flee from one’s fate.” Woman, I know you. Cupid, I know what is going on. I am not taking part in your games anymore. Away with both of you! If everybody was like me, then Cupid would be a fool and not a god. Translated by Howard Weiner
