The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a highly specialized protective barrier that separates the circulating blood from the brain and spinal cord tissue. It is formed by a network of tightly packed cells lining the walls of the brain's blood vessels, known as endothelial cells. The primary function of the blood-brain barrier is to regulate and maintain a stable environment for the brain. The barrier prevents the entry of harmful substances, such as toxins, pathogens, and large molecules, into the brain, while allowing the passage of essential nutrients, oxygen, carbon dioxide, glucose, amino acids, electrolytes, and certain molecules necessary for proper brain function. Key features of the blood-brain barrier include: 1. Tight junctions: The endothelial cells forming the blood-brain barrier have tight junctions between them. These tight junctions create a physical barrier that limits the movement of substances between the cells, preventing the leakage of molecules. 2. Astrocytes: Specialized cells called astrocytes surround the blood vessels in the brain and play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity and function of the blood-brain barrier. They provide structural support and regulate the exchange of certain substances between the blood and brain tissue. 3. Efflux pumps: The blood-brain barrier contains efflux pumps that actively transport certain molecules out of the brain and back into the bloodstream. These pumps help to remove potentially harmful substances that may have crossed the barrier by other means.
