This week we're playing something a bit different... I mean it's a classic RPG but it's a bit different from the high fantasy Final Fantasy and Ys games I previously played. Mother (or Earthbound Zero) from Ape Inc. Disclaimer: I played an "Improved" rom hack version, which, among many things, quadruples the money and XP earned, so the game progresses a bit faster. My thoughts: It's fun. That's my opinion in a nutshell. it nicely takes everything that makes fantasy RPGs fun and puts a nice modern (sometimes a bit meta) spin on it. The enemies are quite unique and interesting for RPG enemies, and as are their attacks (though some, towards the end, can feel a bit infuriating, with nigh instant kill attacks and heavy defences). Visually everything looks really cute and unassuming, and the music is really hits all the right notes throughout the journey. Sure there are some minor complaints I could make, but in the end they are nothing more than minor inconveniences, that I'm sure I'll forget, in a week or two... Overall, I'd say this is potentially the game of the year 1989... but there are still a couple games that I'm anticipating to play, so I'll hold that opinion. Instead I'll just say that this is one of the best NES games ever made, 10/10, would gladly develop an oedipus complex again.
