Whether it’s hitting, fielding or simply his canon of an arm he’s impressive. But in this video all we care about is his glove and how he forms it for third. Machado uses a PRONP5-7 which for a lot of people that means nothing. But to me that means a lot! The NP pattern is designed for people who close their glove thumb to index. This means there’s only one hinge which goes against what would be considered the most efficient way to break a glove in. Having a second hinge allows for smoother transfers and a longer lasting glove. This is why Machado’s break in style is so interesting. He wears the glove with two fingers in the pinky which allows him to create a second hinge in the glove. Now the NP pattern with two in the pinky creates a shallow third basemen’s glove.
